3. Near-Total Thyroidectomy: In specific situations where there are concerns about “cancer spreading to the contralateral lobe or when a patient is at high risk for surgical complications, a near-total thyroidectomy may be performed, leaving a small portion of the thyroid gland intact

During thyroid cancer surgery, the surgeon may also perform a lymph node dissection, especially if there is evidence that the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Lymph nodes in the neck are carefully removed and examined to determine if they contain cancer cells. This step is crucial for accurate staging and helps guide further treatment decisions.

Since the thyroid gland is located close to important structures in the neck, such as the recurrent laryngeal nerves responsible for vocal cord function, intraoperative nerve monitoring may be employed. This technique helps to identify and preserve these nerves during surgery, reducing the risk of complications like voice changes or swallowing difficulties.

After a total thyroidectomy, as the entire thyroid gland is removed, the patient will need to take thyroid hormone replacement therapy for the rest of their life. This therapy ensures the body receives the necessary thyroid hormones to maintain normal metabolism and overall health.

Following thyroid cancer surgery, regular follow-up visits with the medical team are essential to monitor the patient’s recovery and assess for any signs of cancer recurrence. Depending on the specific type and stage of thyroid cancer, further treatments such as radioactive iodine therapy or thyroid hormone suppression therapy may be recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence and manage any remaining thyroid tissue.

Like any surgical procedure, thyroid cancer surgery carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and damage to surrounding structures. However, the risks are generally low, and the procedure is considered safe when performed by experienced surgeons.
